I love accounting, especially small business accounting, and I can’t get enough of it. Sounds a little crazy, I know. I also know that there are many small business owners who can’t stand bookkeeping or accounting. They are very good that doing what they are doing, but they lack skill or lack the time, or lack the time and skill to manage their financial records. If that person is you, get in touch with me.
When I was younger, my father ran a casual restaurant style business in Malaysia. I noticed, there was a selected few customers who frequently came in to purchase the back side of the roasted ducks. My father would saved this part and set aside for them. Curiously, I asked my dad why would anyone eat the backside of a duck. I could not stand just by looking at it, let alone eating it. He said, God made each one of different, so that no part of the duck would be wasted. Some of people like the legs, some preferred the breasts, others would use the bones, necks and head for soup stock, while some would consume the backside.
So, if working with numbers is not your cup of tea or figuring debits and credits feel like a daunting tasks to you, don’t worry. I have you cover.
The Lord put me through various companies big and small and in various duties. He allowed me to accumulate over 10 years of experience in business of accounting and bookkeeping 8 of which was in banking where I have learned a great deal of running an accounting department, juggling cash flow and making daily financial decisions. The most important thing however, was my up bringing and my faith in Christ Jesus has given me the security to handle everything that comes my way with truth, honesty and integrity. I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ when I was 6 or 7 years old, an experience only that the Lord Jesus can reveal to me, again. I said again because I could not recall that event for decades. In His mercy and in His time, the Lord Jesus, answered my prayers and allowed me to graduate with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting from SUNY Empire State College.
Since childhood, my siblings and I had always enjoyed the play of selling stuff (whatever it maybe) and of course we all wanted to be the sellers because that’s where all the actions take place. My interest and my understanding on how a business run began to grow when I got involved actively in my high school co-op program running a bookstore. I learned so much valuable skills from selling products and services to taking inventory, from record keeping to handling vendors and to debt collection. When I was first introduced to accounting concept in high school, I couldn’t say that I liked it immediately. In fact, I requested to be changed to a different class, but as I began to see how a business’ health is unlocked by it’s financial reports, my passion and curiosity about accounting and personal finance began to grow. Now I can’t get enough of it.
As the Lord allows, I volunteer as a MoneyLife mentor for Crown Ministry coaching families across the nation on how to handle God’s money. I believe that when we apply God’s principle onto how we should handle our money, not only will He bless us give us His peace, but He will make us a blessing to others well.
